Corpse Bride is a great animation produced by Tim Burton who is an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe.
Pet Sematary, a film based on Stephen King's novel.
Hi everyone,
This week's topic is death (either premature death as Poe calls is or revival/coming back to life in a different form?). As you all know, Edgar Allan Poe started this romantic thriller movement and has influenced so many people from myriad of backgrounds: authors, directors, artists and musicians. (Stephen King, Tim Burton etc..)
Today, you actually see a lot of zombie films related to what Poe discussed two millennial ago.
I want you to post a 500 word long piece about death and the human interest in premature death.
Guiding questions: 1.How is Edgar Allan Poe's life related to the theme of death? (class notes)
2. Are there any cognitive aspects to it? (this question is a high level one, it requires some research on human psychology- do not forget to add citation here!
2.Why has this theme mesmerized many people? Why has this theme never lost its popularity? (research)- Please include info about the videos, do some brief research on those people as well.
3. SHARING-TEACH US:What can you add to this post to teach us something about premature death? Please add an art piece, a video, a music piece, a short article etc. Make sure you give the name of the producer- citation!

First of all, Edgar Allen Poe’s life is a mysterious, epic and interesting story for everyone. He lost his mother and father in 2 years. He was adopted and lost his money on gambling etc. He used to use the theme of his own “beautiful death”. He really changed the theme of death and put things on it. He wrote under the title of “horror” and he has some masterpieces for English Literature. His death is also a mystery too. He was traveling from a city to another and after a week from his travel began his dead body was found on a road. “The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetical topic in the world.” –Edgar Allen Poe. This could be shown as a cognitive aspect of him according to his idea of beautiful death and horror. The theme of death never lost it’s popularity because we are humans and all of the humans are scared of death and that is what makes it wondered special damping. If someone is scared of something, he or she becomes more curious about it and starts to think about it more. The topic of premature death have always been interesting for me. It always sounds like reincarnation form e and the idea of getting out of a tomb or something else and becoming alive is such a crazy thing. As Edgar Allen Poe wrote his stories, the idea of premature death and horror became improved. He is a writer that we all should respect.
YanıtlaSilErdalcım,you successfully wrapped up what we discussed in class. I wish you added more research and a good piece to share with us. Please make sure you meet the length requirement next time. I really enjoy reading your ideas. :)
SilEdgar Allen Poe is an icon in English Literature. He created too many ideas which lasts for centuries now. His thougths took English horror literature to whole new level. Like the idea of being doomed in your death or not being able to reach peace are universal human fears which every human being would fear them if they think about it. This idea never gets old because too many successful horror authors improved this idea, some created the zombies, some created the mummies, and too many of them worked on the vampires. The reason why it is universal is because human psychology. When Homo Sapiens ( humans ) completed their cognitive evolution they started believing in afterlife because they were so afraid of the idea of stop existing. But this idea which is created by Edgar Allen Poe terrifies people becuse it makes people to think they can not reach the peace, the reward they deserve (Sapiens, Yuval Noah HARARI). Some people think that Edgar Allen Poe's mysterious death has to do something with his writings but to be realistic just because people don't know what happened to him does not mean something supernatural happened. If you are interested in premature death, you can also check Edgar Degas's paintings.
YanıtlaSilAlp, I think what you wrote is overally okay, but there are some points I would like to touch. I really like the way you answered the first question, it is very original when compared to other answers, including mine. The content of your blog post is quite good, too. I can see that you touched the required points. Other than the content, I found the length of it not enough, it should have been longer I think. Also, even if you have answered all the questions, they were not answered in detail, and that was the biggest issue in your blog post. If you can improve these points in the next one, your blog post can be perfect.
SilI am also thinking like Ege. First of all your word count is not enough. I wanted from you to share more sources and combine what you learn in class with different examples. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us.
SilYou did a good research actually, thank you for that. Which of Edgar Degas' paintings do you suggest? Which one do you think reflects the theme better? Length requirement is important I have to agree with your friends. :)
SilThe Legend is not only about Edgar Allan Poe’s talent and genius, but more importantly, he chose the motif of death to build a creepy compelling kingdom that there was no one who could handle as well as he did. The way he looks at the theme of horror is much more different than other horror writers. His theme death was very strong, we human beings affair from the term of not existing. In human psychology the fear takes a very crucial part. Fear of death is the fundamental tool that keeps us alive in this world. It contains every second of our lives. Did you know that when a s/he is about to die he sees his kids or his wife for a last time to pump adrenalin to his blood. Poe had a very struggling phenomenons through his life. He was adopted at the very young age, he married with his cousin and lost her. His also mother died in a very painful way. All of those occurrences forced him to write about death and the theme horror. With the usage of horror he became timeless with his piece of art stories. He was pervading gloom to our souls with his descriptions in his story and especially the way he looks at the topic premature death. In the short story we have read in our class he mentioned it a lot. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic romance that describes a visit in a crumbling mansion of the narrator’s friend named Roderick Usher who has a serious madness disease. He tries to dispel Usher’s gloom even though Usher’s young sister Madeline has been placed un the family vault dead. Usher is convinced she lives and after Usher’s death, the great house splits asunder and sinks into the tarn. I think the role of Madeline originally comes from Poe’s sister Rosalie who became insane in a very young age. Also when I searched about his biography I found it out that it was correct, his sister was insane at a very young age. That must effect him a lot. Fear actually effects our deep affairs of something and Poe's was this event so that he wrote s short story like this and the theme of premature death is also a fear that all of us have it in our subconscious. Poe knew that very well and used it in a perfect way with his oxymorons and metaphors to take control of the readers and he did a perfect job. I would like to finish with a quote from The Legend, "Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality"...

SilYour blog post is totally amazing, mate! First of all, i want to say that your idea about the similarity of Madeline and Poe’s real sister was very impressive and logical. It's obvious that you made a lot of research about this topic which is very good for you. You have great answers and an inspiring blog post.
SilFirst of all I would like to say your blog post is catchy and fun to read. Also It was absolutely genius the way you connected the story and Edgar Ellan Poe's life. Your knowledge about the topic is perfect, great job!

SilI realy enjoyed reading about his sister, didn't know much about her. Thanks for the great info you shared with us, southpark sharing is sooo goood! The kids quesiton about emos? ahahha I love the clarity of your expression. good command of English.
SilDeath, which is the end of our existence scares us the most in life. Being unaware of the exact time of our death makes it even worse. Therefore, the certainty of death makes us extremely frightened and it is used a lot in horror. Death has inspired art, religion and most importantly literature through the ages. Edgar Allan Poe is a creative and successful writer who also used the theme “death” in his stories. His mother passed away when he was three and he was separated from his siblings. Especially, the death of his mother was a real tragedy for him. This might be the reason of him using the theme death in his stories. Also after his death of his mother he lost his beloved Virginia and suffered from poor health. One of his impressive quote is “The death of a beautiful woman is unquestionably the most poetical topic in the world”. People are all afraid of death because it is a mystery. As we discussed in the class, fear of the unknown is used a lot in horror. Death is also an unknown. We don’t exactly know what will happen to us after death. Therefore, people are afraid of death. From a TMT approach, humans cope with mortality by denying their own mortality, and avoiding thinking about it. Unfortunately it is not possible to not think about it when you are forcing yourself to forget. “The more you know you shouldn’t think about it, the more you must think about it” is an example of paradox which we discussed in class. We can’t control imagining our own death or the death of our loved ones. It also forces us to wonder why we were created. These are the reasons that this theme mesmerized many people and never lost popularity as it’s supposed to be. We can’t control death and lots of people experience death in their lives. Just like Edgar Allan Poe lost his mother when he was very little. Tim Burton is a successful animator who is an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe. He uses the themes fantasy and horror. His stop-motion animated feature called “The Corpse Bride” received an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature film. Interestingly, the bride rises from the grave in the film. She is supposed to be dead in her grave but she comes back to life. People are also interested in afterlife. We don’t exactly know if there is an afterlife or not. Revival is commonly used in stories and films. We don’t want to believe that our existence will not be continued after we die. People face with their fear of death by using this in their films and stories. Stephen King is a successful horror writer who made his name in the horror and fantasy genres. Pet Sematary is a film based on Stephen King’s novel. Although the animation Corpse Bride and the film Pet Sematary is completely different, they have the same topic. They reflect revival in different perspectives but it does not change the theme. This shows us that death is a very effective and powerful topic.

I liked your opinions and your use of language. you covered all the questions and I especcially liked your source..
SilWhat a nice article! You seamlessly integrated everything we covered in class, including the paradox :) Thanks Elif, you are a great addition to my class.
SilWhen people talks about horror in the English literature Edgar Allen Poe is definately the first name that pops in people's minds. He was the pioneer of horror in English and therefore has touched upon the biggest fears in human psychology such as the fear of death. He himself has shaped and enriched the concept of horror. He not only gave people something to be afraid of, he also gave many people inspiration to enlarge this concept. The fear of death and the fear of dead people always startles people. Why? Because death is the most unpredictable and unknown fear of all. In people's mind death can always appear in any moment, which is also the reality. In Allan Poe's life death was the tool that inspired him. His life was a struggle throughout. Not having his real family, fighting with poverty, alcholizm, etc. All of these qualities most probably inspired him to write about death. Then his mysterious death made his artwork more valuable to us. Because the reason of it was unknown similar to how death is unknown. Also his premature but expected death was one of the reason why his art work is remarkable. His work was towards the human psycology. Therefore made a huge impact on many people's lifes. Many people understand the fear of death by reading his poems and etc. and effected them pyscologically. The effects of the artwork is very deep in people's mind that many movies were inspired by him. His artwork gave people the delicate sense of death that in every piece of his art reader's emotions and mood is changed accordingly to the story. Basically the story ruled the reader. Therefore he is the one and only and will be the one and only true pioneer of the concept of death.
YanıtlaSilyour blog is very clear and good also ı realy like your idea mertcim.

YanıtlaSilLike life and giving birth death is a normal procedure of life. Birth is a joyful event however death is scary and bad. Death is always popular because nobody exactly knwos anything about death. As there is no change about what is death, how is death after somebody dies. Eveybody wonders death however they are also afraid of it. Death create anxiety to the people because they only know it from the remarks from other people. They like reading novels books ,poems releated to death. People like to read Edgar Allam Poe because he wrote his works releated to death. His name brings to the readers mind images of murderer and madman. His early life was affective in his writings because he lost his parents in early ages. His only aim is to reach his life goal in death. He died very early and the real reason of his death is not still known exactly.
YanıtlaSilFirst of all premature deaths are always popular because people generally don't know the real reason of them. The unknown is always popular because it evokes fear. In fact phyhscological the reason of death fear is people don't know what happens to them so they try to learn from the poems, writings ,videos. As I said before it is the fear of unknown , fear of loss of control, fear for those left behind fear of the act of dying. No one knows what is death like. But the Bible says " when we live our body we are at home with the lord." " We will given a new glorified bod." Moreover most of the people think when they die they will lose their control of their life. Sometimes they don't trust god to provide their needs. They are used to direct their life but when they die they don't know who controls them . The other thing they fear is living the loved once on eart. "The cristian view of death is "seperation" ultimate death is seperation from god. With physical deat , we will be seperated from our loved ones on Eart for a time." The other thing they fear is they don't know how they will die . Everybody wants to die in a painless way. For example nobody wants to die by burning or drowning.
So the popularity about the death is because of them. However these are all related to physcology of them when the problems are solved the fear of death replace its popularity to the wonder of death.Edgar Allan Poe has popularity because he always use the theme of death. This because of his life and his characteristics for me.
"I’m afraid of death
because it inflates
the definition
of what a person
is, or love, until
they become the same,
love, the beloved,
immaterial.
I’m afraid of death
because it invents
a different kind of
time, a stopped clock
that can’t be reset,
only repurchased,
an antiquity.
I’m afraid of death,
the magician who
makes vanish and who
makes odd things appear
in odd places—your
name engraves itself
on a stranger’s chest
in letters of char."
In this poem the poet tries to teach us what is death and why people are afraid of death. There are lots of literary work related to death .And if it doesn t have exact meaning or understanding there will be more things related into death.
Good job Yaren, I very much enjoyed reading it.
SilFirst and above all, I would like to start my blog with writing some about death –it’s usage in movies and literature, it’s affects on people and premature death, of course. I didn’t want to jump into the questions directly, because there is more at the background before those questions. Life and death have been the primary concepts for all the human race from the dawn of civilization. It is because those concepts are the first known ones for all living creatures. Life and death duality has been favourite for many authors to use in literature. The great British author William Shakespeare was one of them and it can easily be seen in his –as we also mentioned some in the class- ‘Romeo and Juliet’. There are also authors who decided to use solely one of those big themes: Death. The pioneer of the theme ‘Death’ in literature is undoubtly Edgar Allen Poe. He is also considered as one of the most important authors in Gothic literature. The way he uses death, horror, dreariness, darkness and opressive settings –as we are still observing them in his short story ‘The Fall of The House of Usher’- have been an inspiration for William Lovecraft, Stephen King and Tim Burton, who are all great producers and users of death and horror in their works. Actually if we take a moment to look at Edgar Allen Poe’s life, we can understand why he is an influentiual and a marvelous author of death and horror. Edgar A. Poe lost both his mother and father when he was only 3 years old. Her mother died, and his alcoholic father abondened him; and Edgar has to become a different person hereafter. He was forced to live a life which he didn’t even know how to. He never officially adopted by his second family, which means he never had a chance to live with a real family. I think the underlying reason why he used death in his works is clear when his life is considered. He was like a living dead through his whole life and he wanted to use this theme of ‘death’ in his works and he did perfectly. Also, him being the creator of premature death in literature and using it deftly are related with his life. It is because he never wanted to be alive after the struggles he survived and he tried to commit suicide more than once after his wife’s death, but he failed. I don’t know if it is a coincidence but Edgar A. Poe has a mysterious death, which could not be resolved. Starting from this, I would like to write some more about premature death(as Poe calls it). Edgar A. Poe’s definiton of premature death is willing to die but failing or burial while alive and coming back to life. This theme can be seen in some of his stories like Berenice, The Fall of the House of Usher, Premature Burial etc. There are not so many cognictive aspects to Poe’s definition of premature death, but there are still a few. The most common them is about burying people alive. It was deeply rooted in Western culture during the nineteenth century. This culture has created a fear named ‘taphophobia’ which means ‘the fear of tomb’ in every single person. Psychologist Katherine Ramsland quoted “For many people during this era, Poe’s tales were truly horrifying, if only because there were such stories, for real”. This quote explains, why many people are mesmerized by the themes ‘death’ and ‘premature death’. These themes never lost their popularity because they are touching the deepest fears of all people. For sharing and teaching part, I would like to conclude it with Count Karnice-Karnicki. He patented a casket for taphophobes in 1897. It’s name was safety coffin. The coffin was sealed, but had a tube running from the ground above to a ball that sat on the chest of the corpse. Any movement inside released a spring and opened up a box at the surface of the grave that then allowed air and light to come into the coffin. A bell inside that box would ring to summon help and a flag signaled the need for a gravedigger. Also, it is believed that the idioms “saved by the bell” and “graveyard shift” derived after this invention.
YanıtlaSilthe way you have started your writing was good i think and you have talked about all of the queations and i think you wrote about 500 words, impressive!
Sili liked you introduction pharagraph. connections between death theme and egdar's life was strong and logical. and your sharing is pretty interesting. Good work.
SilEge, I really enjoyed reading your ideas about premature death. I think you answered all of the questions in detail and also gave the necessary information. Also your connection about Romeo and Juliet is wisely. I loved your blog!
SilInteresting concept to start with- duality. Taphophobia is new for me and sounds very interesting as there are incidents known about "not dying" after all. The bell and the idiom connection is great proof for your level of sophistication. Great job Ege.
SilEdgar Allan Poe is a brilliant 19th century American poet and author. He was a very good writer but no one in his time recognized that. He created new words and new genres of horror. He created masterpieces like “The Fall of the House of Usher” which we study and discuss now in the class. He had a very strange life. However, the strangest thing about him was his death. His death is still a mystery. He left Richmond to go to Philadelphia. 4 days later, he was found on Baltimore in great distress. He was taken to Washington College Hospital but he died on October 7, 1847. At that time, it was said that he died of “congestion of brain” which causes brain not to get oxygen via blood because the vessels are engorged. But some people believe that he died because of alcoholism some other talked about carbon monoxide poisoning. That makes his death mystery. He was already morally dead after her wife Virginia’s death. He was truly affected by the death of people he valued who were his mother and Virginia. After the death of his mother, we can see his mood in his stories. He was depressed and dark inside but trying to live the passion of love with someone in order to get rid of dilemma of being death or alive. He wasn’t aware of whether is he living or not. He expresses his dilemma by those words; “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?”(BrainyQuote). His stories were reflections of his life. He wrote those stories because he was thinking that he was dead. That’s why we call his stories horror stories. Humans are afraid of death. We are afraid of obscurity of death. Obscurity is a kind of paradox. Brain is unable find a solution and that causes people to think on it. More you think, more you get afraid. Another reason of death fear, actually fear of a dead person is called as uncanny valley. Uncanny valley is a contrast about something’s human likeness. If something’s human likeness increases, it seems more familiar to us. But there is an exception in the chart. If something seems like a human but has small differences, brain creates a response of revulsion or fear. For example, zombies and dead bodies, for example, Madeline character in the story, are the scariest things in the chart. I think appearance is as effective as the revival. Fear in Poe’s stories is not just about death; it is related to the appearance, too. If you want to learn more about it, visit http://www.uncanny-valley.co.uk/ Theme of death and revival is never become old-fashioned. Death is always popular because all people will die and those kind of stories makes them remember the death. Revival scares us because it is about feelings and we usually can’t control our feelings, especially the fear one. For the premature death, you can take a look at Antoine Wiertz’s “The Premature Burial” painting.
YanıtlaSilYour blog was really good and you answered alll the questions well. You made good analysis about Edgar Allan Poe..
SilStunning painting! Wooow! I love the way you tried to explore the "obscurity" of death and brought logical explanations to what you said. Full of ideas, high level of awareness.. Very good reflection, well done.
SilEdgar Allan Poe is an author who covers the greatest fears of everyone such as insanity, torture and especially, death. Poe didn’t exactly know what a real family looks like. His father abandoned the whole family and his mother died when he was only three years old. The family who took care after him when his mother died, never actually adopted him. He gambled all of the money that his new family gave him. He didn’t care about anything until he get married to his wife. His wife was the only one he had for a while. When she died, the only thing that ties him to life was gone. Thereby, he started to have some mental issues. He committed suicide, yet failed, and a year after he mysteriously died. The reason he mostly writes about the theme death is, loosing his mother and then his love of his life was too much for him. He couldn’t deal with it and went crazy. He reflected his sick imagination to his works just like he did in his short story ‘’The House Of the Usher’’. In this short story he wrote about insanity and premature death. Many authors and directors are influenced by the works of Poe. Tim Burton’s and Stephan King’s works resemble Poe’s by using dull settings like stern trees, graveyards, and the theme premature death. Premature death is when someone who seems dead has been buried but later it comes back from death because s/he isn’t dead yet. Premature Death has been one of the biggest fears of the mankind for many centuries. Because of the lack of knowledge, people used to assume the ones that are not breathing or unconscious as dead. They didn’t use to wait and see if they are really dead, yet they immediately burry them. But sometimes there used to be some exceptions. Some of the people who they thought that they were dead woke up in their coffins. This event was a problem which comes from the 12th century. Nevertheless, even now people have the fear of being buried alive. It’s mostly because of the fear of tight spaces, breathing problems, and of course a mordant death which kills them slowly with the lack of oxygen. Death is the most common fear of every person. We are mostly frightened from the things that we can’t identify or understand what they are. We all know that every living creature must die after a period of time, and we all accept that we are not going to live on this earth forever. That is why we are working so hard in order to not to have any health or financial problems in the future, and to live a happy life with the people that we love. Actually everyone is okay with the idea of dying, what we are not okay with is the question that everyone asks since many centuries. What happens after we die? This is the biggest mystery. Most of the people live with the fear of death even if they try to avoid thinking it. Religion is another effect on people to be scared from death. Religious societies continue their lives with the rules which they believe obeying them properly will guarantee a life in heaven with the God’s approval. If they don’t obey, they believe that they will go to hell, where they will suffer for all the sinful things that they have done. The ones that question about life, with using knowledge, try to find the path to the unknown things. I want to share with you the movie Insidious’ one of the soundtracks named ‘’Tiptoe Through The Tulips’’. What I like about this song is when you first hear it, it sounds like a funny song but when you listen it in the movie, it becomes really creepy. I hope you like as much as I do.
YanıtlaSilFem, this is definitely a good blog. I liked your ideas, examples and the transitions that you made between the topics. The content is satisfying and the questions are well answered. Good job.
SilThat song gave me the worst creeeeeeeeeps. You know how to find good music for the right emotion. Furthermore, you weaved what you learned wonderfully well into your discussion. Just another amazing post!

YanıtlaSilWhy do people get scared? Horror is a genre seeking to elicit a negative emotional reaction from readers by playing on the audience's primal fears. Edgar Ellan Poe is one of the best writers in horror genre. Edgar Ellan Poe struggled with lots of shocking events. His father left them when Edgar wasn't even one and his mother died a year later. He was raised by John and Frances Allan but he wasn't officially adopted by them. Afterwards he married with his thirteen year old cousin Virginia and she also died two years later because of tuberculosis. After experiencing lots of traumas he started looking at the theme death in a unique way which helped him become one of the bests in horror genre. In the book "The Fall of the House of Usher" by Edgar Ellan Poe there is a man named Usher who is schizophrene being visited by the narrator. The detailed description he makes creates a horrifying setting and makes the reader think that the house is alive. They saw Usher's sister Madeline who was buried alive. This is a reference to premature death, not being able to die. People are afraid of not dieing and not being able to rest. Madeline is one of the examples for this situation she couldn't die and spread his anger on his brother. Being dead is not something bad, you don't feel anything. “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”(Mark TWAIN)
your first sentence was a question and i think that hooked me up to read your writing. You also wrote short like me but the way you tell what you understand is good.

SilArda, It would be better if you wrote more of your ideas. Still, I appreciate your work. I think the quote of Mark Twain is very impressive and related to this topic. Thanks for your opinions!

SilArdacım, thank you for the great reflection on Edgar's life. Please make sure you meet the length requirement next time though.
SilDeath has always been mystery to people because it is unexplainable. We can’t get any news from people who die, we never know what happens to them or is there life after dying. Therefore it is unknown event. Dead people are mostly buried and their body decay in the ground. We always see graveyard as scary places in films or we read horror stories about death and graveyards. Edgar Allen Poe was a good writer of gothic horror. Theme of death was dominant in his stories and poems. He especially wrote about premature death. Early death of people confuses his mind. Edgar Poe’s father died when he was two years old and after a short time his mother also died. She had tuberculosis. This made him so unhappy. When he was 26 years old, he married with his cousin who is fourteen years old. She died of tuberculosis too, like his mother. The deaths of these two beautiful young women affected him deeply. Critics mostly think that theme of early death comes from these experiences. Edgar Allen Poe has financial problems because of gambling and he is a heavy drinker also he loses his life attachments when he was young. He has dark soul and his mind is full of theme of death. In the Philosophy of Composition essay Edgar Allen Poe say “the death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably the most poetical in the world.” (Beautiful Death). His mother and wife are very young and beautiful when they died. Their premature or early death made inspiration to Edgar Allen Poe. He was the leader of this horror literature. After him many writers, directors and musicians used this theme. This theme is always popular because the idea of death and unknown are attractive to people. Corpse Bride is animated story by Tim Burton. This fantasy film is around the theme of death and coming to life after death. Tim Burton is a fan of Edgar Allen Poe and in this film we see element of gothic horror. This film made in 2005 and this shows this theme is still very popular. Pet Sematary is a book by Stephen King, its film was made in 1989 the film has horror elements and the setting is pet cemetery. Edgar Allen Poe wrote another horror story and publish it in 1844. This story was called The Premature Burial. This story shows his fear to be buried alive. In fact, at that time some people were buried alive because doctors say they are death Edgar Allen Poe used this fear in this story. In 1962, they made a movie of this story if you want to watch it you can find it in this link:

"Beautiful Death -------The Death Motif in Edgar Allan Poe's Work." 豆瓣. Web. 10 Oct. 2015.
First of all, I really liked your beginning and it is nice to see that you also mentioned about gothic horror. I think you answered all the questions. Nice work!
SilAlthough the people who knew Edgar Allan Poe used to call him “Father of the Detective Story”, he was also the master of horror. He exactly knew how to use humans’ fears that are deep inside in order to write perfect horror stories and this is what makes him one of the best authors in horror genre. It was probably his sad life and tragic death who made him the master of horror and death. His life wasn’t really fortunate; his father left the family early on and he lost his mother when he was only three years old, he was adopted by a family but he had financial issues with them, his fiancée had become engaged to someone else and after that, the woman he got married died. His unfortunate life made him think that he was already dead but he still exists, like he is stuck in the world and he can’t die somehow. This is the “premature death”, not exactly re-birth but just like resurrecting, can’t dying and still being alive even if you thought you died a hundred times. There are lots of people who are afraid of this premature death. Human psychology just rejects it because the idea of living “forever” scares us. “Organic constructions are not designed to last forever – especially when they’re something as complex as the brain.” (10 Terrifying Downsides to Immortality, Eva Fauen.) The concept that Edgar Allan Poe used became very popular and impressed many people all around the world – includes authors, directors etc. For example, in a Tim Burton movie “The Corpse Bride”, there is a bride who was supposed to be dead but she resurrects and comes out of her grave. Also in “Pet Semetary”, a movie that is based on a novel of Stephen King, some children bury their dead pets in a territory which is known as magical and the pets come back to life. These kind of movies and novels prove that there are lots of artist who has been influenced by Edgar Allan Poe and also people like it because they watch it and make good comments on it. People enjoy seeing this theme because it is always exciting to see how their deep fears are shown to them although it’s scary. Here's an interesting illustration which pictures the premature death drawn by a man called Dean, who was impressed by Edgar Allan Poe’s story “The Premature Burial”: http://www.deviantart.com/art/The-Premature-Burial-46683618
YanıtlaSilİnci, first of all I would like to say that, what you wrote is truly amazing. I really couldn’t find a spot to criticize it. One of my choices to respond is your blog post because, I found it really worthy to leave a good comment. When I look at your blog post nothing lacking caught my eye. You really labored here, I can say that confidently. You answered all the questions in detail and you also found interesting extras. You didn’t skip a part and wrote every required information properly. Also, your blog post is very fluent to read in my opinion. I really admired the work you done.
SilOvat, you know that one of my biggest fears is that being buried alive and that picture was very much interesting for me!! Your blog post was very clear and understandable and very informative, I appreciate it. And thanks to you I will have hard time to sleep in my tomb-like dorm bed, awesome.
Silİnci, it was just perfect the way you write this blog. I think you have explained every single question with very strong thoughts. I wish you have written it before I started to type mine. Your ideas were just amazing good job.
SilYour blog was so awesome! You explained all of the questions so clearly that I have no questions left in my mind about this topic. I appreciate your hard work.
SilThat blog is amazing İnci. You explaned everything with good reason and thinks good job !
SilI'm impressed.Good research on how human psychology rejects the idea. You nailed it! Good job.
Silcareful with length next time though..
SilDeath is a ending of human existance but some people think that death is reaching to mortal freedom.Edgar Allen Poe who used death and horror theme on his novels is also believes that dying is a coming alive with a different form witch is after life . He started to use death creatures as a horror element like ghost or zombies . He was a pilot on army after all he shouldnt be scared of death also there can be times that Edgar Allen wants to kill himself because his life was hard without his parent on early age so he believe that death is coming alive again in a different form. After his wife’s dead he started to put more emotion to death figure.people afraid of death because after some point humans dont want to live in the world that has both bad and good sizes together .After a certain age people want to be happy all the time but they cant do it in the world that has terrible things going on so when they think that they cant die they start to think that they cant reach that happinnes forever . The wanting to end your life gets stronger when you feel pain or sadness or it gets stronger when you lose someone you like like Edgar Allen. He startes to write more depressive and scary stories after he lose his wife wanting to end his life made his emotions stronger. İn most of the religions it says there is a afterlife world with heaven and hell also this idea might make people think that dying is freedom so that they can be happy on heaven . People who want to die to reach mortal happiness waits for their death but people who dont dies so quickly but these people always tries to make their life happy as possible so that they can be satisfied with their life.
YanıtlaSilThanks Toprak, you meticulously wrapped it up, however please meet the length requirement next time, and do not forget to respond to your friends.
SilPeople are using some ways to externalize their ideas, emotions and mental states. People afraid of things, which they do not define. Death is also one of them. We don’t know how it feels. Is it gonna hurt, what is gonna happen after we die? We don’t know their answers so it is extremely frightens us. That’s the reason why people are using undefinable items to scare people. They can also reflect the atmosphere where they live or an event which they lived before. So they want to share what they feel with other people. While they are doing it they can get help from the different branches of art; images, music, theatre, dance, literature. Cinema is also a way to reflect your ideas to other people and it is easy to spread more people.
YanıtlaSilEdgar Allen Po was indisputable one of the most important writer for English literature, “ The Father of the Detective Stories”. “Many of Edgar Allan Poe's contemporaries described him
as he appears in this portrait: a darkly handsome and intelligent man who possessed an unorthodox personality. Despite being acknowledged as one of America's greatest writers of
poetry and short stories, Poe’s life remains shrouded in mystery, with conflicting accounts about poverty, alcoholism, drug use, and the circumstances of his death in 1849”. He is that much famous because of the topics he chose. For example; fear of death, biggest fears of humans psychology. On the other hand, he had an impact on his experiences while he was writing his stories. His mother died when he was three, and her alcoholic father abandoned him. It was not easy what he lived for three year old child. He forced to live with other family and to be another person. Later in his life after his wife’s death he lost the control. Losing people whom he loves affected him deeply then he tried to commit suicide, but he didn’t succeed. “There are two bodies — the rudimental and the complete ; corresponding with the two conditions of the worm and the butterfly. What we call "death," is but the painful metamorphosis. Our present incarnation is progressive, preparatory, temporary. Our future is perfected, ultimate, immortal. The ultimate life is the full design.” By looking at his quote from his book “ The Mesmeric Revelation” we understand that his background affected him and made him the master of horror. Also he was one of the most important representative in history about premature death. Most of his stories he used many different horror elements. One of the most important them is “The Fall of the House of Usher”. At the story he used premature death really well and also descriptions were impressive. Lots of people combine horror with any other elements by looking his works. One of them is Stephen King’s novel, “Pet Cemetery”, also adapted to the cinema. It is about some children bury their dead pets in magical cemetery and pets come back to life.

YanıtlaSil“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? –Edgar Allan Poe. Poe started a movement in horror, and led the theme of death in horror by his works. There are many relations between his life and the main events happening in his stories. Lost of his mother at the age of 2, and lost of his wife, also his cousin, affected him deeply, and made him use premature death of women in his works. On the other hand, after using premature death in his stories, he writes about revival to life. Premature death is most pobably his biggest fear, in the meantime, the idea of coming back to life is his biggest desire. However, he knows it’s not possible to happen and uses it as a fear element. The cognitive aspects differ from person to person, yet there are always something deep inside, an idea that scares people. Edgar Allan Poe used and reflected human psychology very well to scare his readers, and he became an inspiration to many popular authors of horror with the theme of premature death. For example, Tim Burton, and Stephen Hawking, both are well known writing about horror, are inspired from Poe’s works, and there are many other in different areas. An artist named Antoine Joseph Wiertz, lived in the same period with Edgar Allen Poe and had a similar life with him painted about the same theme “death”, and most frequently about premature death. Wiertz also lost his mother when he was young, and continues doing his paintings about the death of beautiful women. From the mid-18th century onwards, which both Poe and Wiertz lived in, there was an increase in the public's fear of being mistakenly buried alive, coming from the uncertainty of signs of death. Antoine Wiertz has a painting of a man buried alive which reflects the mind of the society of those times. When we consider about the question “why people are afraid of death, particulary premature death?”, we see there is not a direct answer to it. People’s fear of death hides deep inside of their psychology. People are especially afraid of what they don’t know, and the things they are not able to figure it out. The concept of death comes first in this case. Because of death is not perceivable, people creates abstract thoughts, and as an example religions comes first. All of the religions try to explain what would happen after death and also, İt is something science cannot explain. The fear of premature death will be there until the mystery of death is solved. You can look at the link below to see the painting named “The Premature Burial” and other paintgs about death by Antoine Joseph, the artist I mentioned, and also to learn more about him.

Yumoş, I think you answers are splendid. Your ideas about premature death and mentioning about Antoine Joseph was brilliant. I looked at the paintings and they were amazing. Thanks for sharing it with us.
SilInteresting point made by emphasizing how science is not allowed to enter into that mysterious world. Lovely post. Fancied the paintings dear.
Sil"Our souls existed before we were born and continue to exist after we die. And the process of being reborn continues over and over as our souls evolve spiritually." Some say, death isn't the end, it is a chapter of whole life but the reason why everyone is scared of it, is not knowing the next chapter. People always want to make everything clear. The psychology of not ending something makes people anxious. Edgar Allan Poe, who is the master of horror is a man who overcomes the hard times in his life by himself. He mostly uses the theme death and he emphasizes the dark sides of it which is the reflection of his feelings in real life. He is adopted and it is a case that makes the life harder than it is. As the time goes, the problems he has turns him dark inside and it causes him to write books. The things that happen in the past effects the psychology of a person. He shows his inside in his poems.
YanıtlaSilAlone
"From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view."
What he's been throught is one of the triggers to show his feelings under the theme of fear. He emphasizes the childhood that he never had in his poems and short stoies.
Mysterious things pulls attention and also death is something that is unknown. Every human being wants to learn why they are created, why they are living and what is death and it is the reason why this theme is popular all the time.

YanıtlaSilOne day, we will not escape and we all will die in an unexpected way. Maybe in a car accident while we’re coming back home from our jobs or a cardiac arrest while watching a football game. But what exactly will happen when we start to feel the heat of hell? Biologically, death is the permanent end of the functions of organs in a living organism. The eternal escape of the souls from the flesh. Edgar Allen Poe has always been one of the most influential and inspirational gothic and macabre writers in history. His poems and short stories mainly focus on the theme of death and horror. He was the pioneer of the genre of Gothic literature in early history. Regardless, his meticulous word choosing and his approach to the theme death created the “Poe”. His wording which generally express the inner and the massive deepness of dreariness are related with the traumatic situations from his life and experiences. His father, who was an alcoholic, abandoned him in the year when he was born and his mother died when he was two years old. After his brother’s death, he began more earnest attempts to start his career as writer. He lost his wife whom he loved amorously. “Biographers and critics often suggest that Poe's frequent theme of the "death of a beautiful woman" stems from the repeated loss of women throughout his life, including his wife.”(Weekes,Karen) By the time of his birth throughout his early life, he has experienced a lot of losses. These losses of his collapsed his inner feelings and decayed his soul. Hence, these losses leaded him to utter himself from a dreary perspective. In addition to that, these losses made him to be afraid of death. He poured anxiety of death by the words. We’re taught that death is something we should shy away from, and try to forget about. In that case, the impact and role of the horror movies and stories are enormous. In some of his stories, he focused on one of the important subtopics, the premature death. “The stifling lack of air and fear of death combines with claustrophobia, darkness, and silence to form a terrifying ordeal that does not occur anywhere else on Earth.” Almost every horror movie or story in the world takes the theme of death. Apparently, if there is a paranormal event or a creature in the movie which is created to scare people, the attributes of the creature is not the actual thing which causes people's fears, the capability of the creature to damage and kill people and at the end, leave people in an insecure and damaged manner. It is the dreadful insecureness, unexpected and the unknown which causes people to be afraid of death. It is the fear of the death, which is unknown. This fear generates an anxiety of fear which Poe also had. We feel threatened by death and start to ponder and contemplate about the mysterious other page of Life Book. When we feel threatened, start to dig and go that deepness in our souls. Yes, then the books which have helped to fill out that vacantness of unknown throughout the history.

definition of death in both meanings impressed me. your pharagraph answers all the questions. you could write a little bit more about why we are afraid of death. i liked your type of writing. keep going.
SilBro I think you did a good job at this blog. I liked the perspective to death and the theme horror. Keep up the good work :)
SilBerhan, I really liked how you started to your paragraph. Your realistic example of death, and the connection to the definition of it impressed me. Well done.
SilLike Yağmur said, the way you started to your post grabbed my attention. Grabbing the readers' attention is the most hardest thing I think, at least for me. I liked your way of defining death as well. You used some of the words that we have learned in it, and it was really enjoyable to read.
SilGood research Berhancım, claustrophobia grabbed my attention the most as I was reading.I think that goes wonderfully well with the theme preamture death, becos ultimately, it might be the lack of air not necessarily the fear of revival. Inspirational, thanks.
SilEdgar Allan Poe is the master of suspense. Captivated with horror by the dark romanticism of his poetry invented detective fiction which leads authors, artists, musicians and directors. He is affected by his life experiences which reveals his black soul and made a difference in his short stories. When he was child, he was shocked about the death of his mother, Elizabeth Hopkins Poe. His mother died because of tuberculosis and her painful death obsessed him through the rest of his life. His imagination transforms into the image of death and this image is expanding over Poe’s mind. In his short stories he describes characters as dark hair, pale skin, vacant eyes. This kind of description also comes from his mother death and it constitutes his premature aesthetic standard. In one of the his short stories “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”, in exposition where he describes the house and the characters, He is talking about happy childhood when mind, soul and body are united and after some age, he says that they are separated that’s why they are not happy anymore. It is also related with his past because he also didn’t have happy life after his childhood and he loves using allusions in his stories, he is actually alluding himself. We all think that people are scared about fear of death, but actually people are more scared about not able to die. In general, there is an expression like when you die, you will find a true peace in your mind. But sometimes it does not work like that: When you want to face with death but you can’t, that’s even worse because it makes you to suffer. Like Poe’s mother suffers because of tuberculosis and she dies with a huge pain. Even she wants to die; she can’t until she had time of death. Similarly, Poe also includes this theme in his writing: in “The Fall House of Usher” Madeline dies but she actually didn’t. She came just like a zombie which leads also directors to make a film about zombie creatures. The theme of death influenced religion, poetry, philosophy, psychology, literature through the ages. Many people fascinated by the theme of death because this curious aspect of human nature inspires people to know more about death. Additionally, this theme never lost its popularity because death was perceived to be ever-present in people’s life and also it has many options to reveal more ideas, stories, films. As I mentioned before, many directors, authors also affected by Edgar Allan Poe: Tim Burton and Stephen King which are successfully reflect horror and death in their works. Even thought Poe touches horror and death with his amazing, unique imagination long time ago, his style still exist in Tim Burton’s movies. In many ways they are connected: Poe creates a setting like bleak, dreary, large and dark rooms. Also, In Tim Burton’s movies like Vincent, Corpse Bride; there is similar setting with Poe’s setting. Together with character’s face are just like the setting which is dark eye-shadows and creepy faces. Stephen King also has many similarities with Poe in tone, writing style, depressed description and he also process the theme of death which we can see on the trailer ” Pet Semetary” which is based on Stephen King’s novel. I want you to introduce an art work “The Premature Burial” by Antoine Wiertz because it explained perfectly how premature death works and it also shows that zombie pulls off the coffin. Additionally, One of Tim Burton movie soundtrack “Edward Scissorhands: The Grand Finale” makes you feel high emotions and it captures your mind to breathe.

Nice job Ilgaz. I've been very much drawn by your posts lately. You remembered vincent and how much he likes alluding himself. Thanks.
SilWhat we fear the most is the unknown and what we most lack knowledge of is death. As we are scared of dying we are also scared of not dying -maybe even more. Edgar Allan Poe, the master of horror stories has a personal relationship with death. He experiences death in his very early life by his parents’ death. After that he mentally dies after his wife Virginia’s death and lets his death to be the most mysterious thing in his life. In the short story The Fall of the House of Usher, Poe plays with insanity and death. Twin sister of Roderick Usher rises from death and who knows what happens. In Corpse Bride, there is a world of dead! Victor accidentally gets there and it is literally the world of ones who are not able to die.
YanıtlaSilYesterday I was watching the popular tv series Hannibal’s season two (WARNING: SPOILERS ARE AHEAD), Doctor Lecter and one of his patients who has lung cancer discussed death and how it is scary. What caught my interest is that Doctor Lecter said that he doesn’t find death scary, in fact he said that he finds comfort in it since death makes him live his life to the fullest, knowing that he might die every second. What soon reveals is that the aforementioned patient has taken fatal amounts of morphine to commit suicide; to end her suffering. She dies as she thanks to Doctor Lecter because he made her see the truth beyond death; it is a relief. The “good” guy Hannibal Lecter is, he could not let a patient die in front of himself and “saves” her with a dose of liquid adrenaline. She soon wakes up in a hospital room with Doctor Lecter by her bed. Needless to say that she was unhappy. She instantly starts yelling at Doctor and slaps him on the face.
She was not allowed to die. She was brought back from death. Her relief was taken away from her. Now she has to live up with her past problems and the fact that she committed suicide. Her own version of premature death is that not being able to end the pain she has to go through everyday.
Why I believe many people is scared of not being able to die is due to afterlife that religions created. People of the Islam and Christianity believe huge concept of afterlife, there is hell and heaven and purgatory. But the thing is nobody actually knows if these things are real; no one has seen them and came back to document what are those. What if something happened to somebody and that somebody came back and reported that there was no heaven or hell? Wouldn’t the world go into a chaos? What would people think? People who found comfort in heaven? People who believe God will do the justice of sending evil people to hell?
Unfortunately I am not able to share a video of the scene from Hannibal since it wasn’t a major event in the storyline, just something I had found very interesting but if you need some high quality crime and horror tv show, Hannibal is the one you are looking for!
Sezer, I found your blog post very interesting and glorifired. I loved your ideas on life and death. It’s very nice of you to use the class notes and giving examples about Edgar Allan Poe’s life & stories. I think you gave some great information and you wrote everything clearly. For me, you blog post and especially your thoughts on the topic are amazing.
SilGunes, different than the other posts you mentioned an opposite perspective for the concept death from the TV serie Hannibal which I was planning to watch for a long time. After reading your blog, I will start watching it asap hopefully.
SilLiving life to the fullest.. Nice quote. And religion? No doubt, I agree with you.. great post Güneş, as usual. I will have to start watching as well. :)
SilThroughout the author Edgar Allan Poe's life, he loses his values often. From his childhood, he had to be strong while unbearable events are happening right after each other. He never really knew his parents. His father's lefting the family, mother's passing away, lack of money, his fiancée's engaging with someone else... These all are the things that makes him left behind and never come back. In other words, these are the first and fake examples of death in his early life. His literature works were the best way for him to reflect all his missing parts or his one side which has met with death. Edgar Allan Poe's life had passed by losing, not having. His writings have examples of premature death and maybe it shows that he always had the hope to have his lost things back. What if his mother comes back from the afterlife? It would not be only a good coming, even if she is his mother, because of the concept of death. People live on earth by thinking and doing real things, feeling real emotions. Every event that they plan is real or have probability to be real. They can have unreal thing just by imagining and they just see them in creatively made films. In such a realistic life, even if afterlife is just a concept that they totally believe, coming back from the afterlife can exist just in imagine. They do not be shocked by things that are made of human beings. As everyone knows, nobody has made a comig back from the afterlife machine, and will never make. So, premature death will always be schocking and scary for human beings. As addition, in my opinion te reason of non-existance of coming back from the afterlife is explaned by Mother Teresa perfectly. "Death is nothing else but going home to God, the bond of love will be unbroken for all eternity." Because God does not want to break the bond of love.
YanıtlaSilAnd also I found a website which has interesting answers given to questions about afterlife, it is George Anderson's afterlife revelations. I hope you read and like it.

Seçe, your post had very interesting points of view, I enjoyed reading this but I'd appreciate it even more if you mentioned Corpse Bride or Pet Semetary which I believe are very wondeful pieces of work.Other than that, enjoyable ideas, thanks for sharing!

Sil“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” said Edgar Allen Poe. Edgar Allen Poe usually used to horror and death for theme in his stories. Because his life is harrowing, unlucky and mysterious. When he was a child, he lost his mother and father. This is very sadness event for a child and also this could affect his psychology. Then he adopted by someone and grown up with them. When he was adult, he loved the girl who is his cousin. They got married but his love was died in short time. In brief he lost his mother, father and love. Maybe because of lost everything, made him fearless for death These all event could affect him to wrote and used “death” theme in his stories.
YanıtlaSilUsually people afraid of death because it is unknown things. People don’t know what will happen after death. There are some beliefs about afterlife but we cannot say that, exactly one of them is true. People wonder about death that is why this topic always be a popular and also it gets attention in life. Usually people connect this belief with religion. There are a lots religion in life and both of them have ideas about death and afterlife. I think that is why always religion is be the most powerful force in our world. Religions give them guaranty to afterlife. For example ın Muslimism, the book which name is Kuran-ı Kerim says that, if you follow our rules and being nice people in Kuran’s way, you can go the heaven and live good life after death.
Tim butler who is admirer of the Edgar Allen Poe is a American film director. He has different style than others. He makes horror movies usually and uses gothic things in his movies. for example the movie which name is pet sematary he uses zombies staff which is created by Edgar Allen Poe. That show us the director respects Edgar Allen Poe’s ideas and uses in his movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6PoILa4BDg you can watched this video to learn reason of the death because if you learn the reason of the death you can stop premature death. The man who is talking in the video is talking truth. Check this out.
Thank you for this insightful and the meaningful sharing, I agree on the fact that religions offer alternative answers to such questions. And Kooran is opening a door that is pretty scary if you do not abide by the rules.. Tough!
SilThanks.
